The one A.I. thing you need for the watercooler today

'AI confetti': 91% of Kiwi firms use AI, but only 15% scale it company-wide

Most NZ businesses have dabbled in AI tools, but almost none have integrated it across operations - a stark adoption-to-deployment gap that shapes national competitiveness.

Straight up…
It's the difference between an AI that helps you and an AI that helps itself to your data.

Alignmentnoun

1.Alignment means making sure an AI system actually does what you asked it to do, not something else. Think of it like teaching a kid to tidy their room - if they're misaligned, they'll hide the mess under the bed instead. Today's news shows AI can now fix its own alignment problems, which is genuinely useful.

One tool worth trying this week

Claude

Chat assistant

A chat assistant that can hold entire documents in its head and help you think through them.

You type a question or task, Claude writes back. The key thing: you can dump a whole document, spreadsheet, email chain or project brief into it, and ask it to work with all that material at once. It remembers what you've told it and builds on it as you go. No special training needed.

Why it matters here: Ellen Mackenzie from Dishing up Digital spent three months running her business with Claude handling the thinking work alongside her. She hit $100K in revenue that quarter for the first time. She was confident enough in the results to re-record her video about it. For small business owners here, that's a real example of what happens when you actually use one of these tools instead of just wondering if it might help.
